AP Physics 1 Exam Sections (Section 1 & Section 2)
The current AP Physics 1 exam runs about 3 hours total, split into two equally weighted sections:
Section I: Multiple Choice — 40 questions, 80 minutes, worth 50% of your score. Each correct answer is worth 1 point, with no penalty for guessing.
Section II: Free Response — 4 questions, 100 minutes, worth the other 50% of your score. Unlike a lot of AP exams, each FRQ here tests a distinct skill rather than being interchangeable:
- Mathematical Routines (10 points) — set up and execute a multi-step calculation correctly.
- Translation Between Representations (12 points) — move between graphs, equations, diagrams, and written explanations of the same physical situation.
- Experimental Design and Analysis (10 points) — design an experiment, linearize data, and justify your method.
- Qualitative/Quantitative Translation (8 points) — explain a phenomenon conceptually, then support it with the math.
That’s 40 raw points from free response plus 40 raw points from multiple choice, for a combined 80 raw points — commonly rescaled to a 100-point composite (50 from each section) for score-prediction purposes.
A few other current-exam details worth knowing:
- Calculators: more generous than most AP exams — a four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator is permitted on both sections, either handheld or the built-in option inside Bluebook.
- Format: this is a hybrid digital exam. Multiple-choice questions are answered in the Bluebook app; free-response prompts are also viewed in Bluebook, but you’ll handwrite your FRQ answers in a paper booklet.
- Heads up for future test-takers: College Board has already confirmed a further format change effective the May 2027 exam (42 MCQs in 85 minutes, 4 FRQs in 95 minutes, still 50/50 weighted). That’s a mean score of 3.12, with 67.3% of students scoring a 3 or higher. It’s worth putting that number in context: AP Physics 1 has historically had one of the lower pass rates among AP exams, but the 2025 redesign produced the largest single-year pass-rate jump of any AP subject that year, up from 47.3% in 2024. In other words, the exam is still genuinely challenging, but noticeably more approachable than it was just a couple of years ago.
What Score Do You Need for College Credit in AP Physics 1?
A 3 is the general passing convention across AP exams, and many colleges will accept it for some form of credit or placement consideration. Physics 1 is one of the subjects where that convention matters less in practice than it does on paper, though:
- A meaningful number of selective colleges — especially for students planning to major in a STEM field — require a 4 or 5 specifically for physics credit, even when they’ll accept a 3 in other subjects.
- Engineering and physics departments in particular sometimes have separate, stricter AP credit policies than the college’s general education requirements.
- Because policy varies so much here, it’s worth checking your target school’s specific department-level AP credit chart rather than assuming the standard “3 = passing” rule applies the same way it does elsewhere.
How to Get a 5 on AP Physics 1
A 5 on this exam comes down to execution under the specific rubric structure as much as raw physics knowledge. A few of the highest-leverage habits:
- Practice experimental design questions deliberately. This FRQ type asks you to design a procedure, not just analyze given data — practice writing out a full method, including how you’d control variables and what you’d measure.
- Show every step of your reasoning and equations, even when you’re confident in the final answer. FRQs award partial credit for correct setup and logic, so an unexplained final number scores worse than a fully justified process that reaches the same result.
- Use correct significant figures consistently. It’s a small habit that costs easy points when skipped, especially on Mathematical Routines questions.
- Read graph labels and best-fit lines carefully before answering. A surprising number of missed points come from misreading axis units or slope direction rather than a conceptual misunderstanding.
