AP US History Score Calculator 2026
APUSH is graded differently from most AP exams: four sections, four different weights. This calculator takes your multiple-choice, short-answer, DBQ, and long-essay scores and converts them into an estimated AP score from 1 to 5. It also shows which section is holding your score back.
Note: This is an unofficial estimator. It is not produced or endorsed by the College Board, and official cutoffs are set after each exam.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter your multiple-choice score (out of 55).
- Enter your three SAQ scores (0–3 each).
- Enter your DBQ score (0–7) and LEQ score (0–6).
- Read your estimated composite and AP score, then change a number to see what a stronger essay would do.
If you grade your own essays, use the official College Board rubrics and award a point only when you can point to the exact sentence that earns it.
How AP US History Is Scored
| Section | Format | Time | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple Choice | 55 questions | 55 minutes | 40% |
| Short Answer (SAQ) | 3 questions | 40 minutes | 20% |
| Document-Based Question (DBQ) | 1 essay | 60 minutes | 25% |
| Long Essay (LEQ) | 1 essay | 40 minutes | 15% |
So written work makes up 60% of your grade. No calculator is needed or useful on this exam.
Composite formula used by this calculator (150 points total):
- Multiple choice: correct answers × 1.0909 (max 60)
- SAQ: total points (out of 9) × 2.2222 (max 20)
- DBQ: points (out of 7) × 3.5714 (max 25)
- LEQ: points (out of 6) × 2.5 (max 15)
A Worked Example
A student gets 40/55 on multiple choice, scores 2, 2, and 2 on the SAQs, 5/7 on the DBQ, and 4/6 on the LEQ.
- MCQ: 40 × 1.0909 = 43.6
- SAQ: 6 × 2.2222 = 13.3
- DBQ: 5 × 3.5714 = 17.9
- LEQ: 4 × 2.5 = 10.0
- Composite: 84.8 out of 150 (about 57%)
On the estimated bands below, that is a high 3, just under a 4. One extra DBQ point adds 3.6 to the composite, and that alone could close the gap.
Estimated AP US History Score Cutoffs
College Board does not publish cutoffs in advance. They are set after each exam and shift slightly every year. These are planning estimates:
| Estimated composite | AP score |
|---|---|
| ~70% and above (about 105+ of 150) | 5 |
| ~58–69% | 4 |
| ~43–57% | 3 |
| ~30–42% | 2 |
| Below ~30% | 1 |
If you land near a boundary, treat it as “close to that score,” not a guarantee.
How to Raise Your APUSH Score
DBQ (7 points):
- Write a thesis that makes a clear, defensible argument, not just a restatement of the prompt.
- Use at least six documents and explain how each supports your argument.
- Add outside evidence that is not in the documents.
- The complexity point is the hardest to earn. It comes from showing nuance, such as a cause and its limits, or a similarity and a difference.
SAQs (3 points each):
- Answer in two or three sentences per part. Each part is graded separately, so extra detail earns nothing.
- Name a specific event, person, or law instead of a general statement.
LEQ (6 points):
- Pick the prompt from the period you know best.
- Spend two or three minutes planning your thesis and evidence before you write.
Multiple choice:
- Questions are built around short sources. Read the source first and identify its author, date, and purpose before looking at the options.
- Never leave a question blank, because there is no penalty for guessing.
Timed practice with real past FRQs, graded against the official rubric, shows you which section is costing you the most.
