Half Birthday Calculator: Find Your Exact Half Birthday
Your half birthday is the date six months after your birthday, the midpoint between one birthday and the next. Enter your date of birth above and the calculator shows your half birthday date, the day of the week, and how many days away it is.
Most dates are simple, but a few birthdays near the end of a month don’t have a matching day six months later. The sections below explain how those are handled.

What Is a Half Birthday?
It’s the date exactly six months after (or before) your birthday. A January birthday has a July half birthday, and a June birthday has one in December. It’s not an official holiday, just a friendly tradition.
The Basic Rule
Add six months to the birth month and keep the same day number.
| Birthday | Half birthday |
|---|---|
| March 15 | September 15 |
| June 3 | December 3 |
| October 20 | April 20 |
Here is every month pair:
| Birth month | Half birthday month |
|---|---|
| January | July |
| February | August |
| March | September |
| April | October |
| May | November |
| June | December |
| July | January |
| August | February |
| September | March |
| October | April |
| November | May |
| December | June |
When the Date Doesn’t Exist
Some months have fewer days, so adding six months can land on a date that isn’t on the calendar. In that case the standard approach is to use the last day of that month.
| Birthday | “Six months later” | Half birthday |
|---|---|---|
| March 31 | September 31 | September 30 |
| May 31 | November 31 | November 30 |
| August 29 | February 29 | Feb 29 (leap year) or Feb 28 |
| August 30 | February 30 | Feb 29 (leap year) or Feb 28 |
| August 31 | February 31 | Feb 29 (leap year) or Feb 28 |
| October 31 | April 31 | April 30 |
| December 31 | June 31 | June 30 |
Every other birth date works with the basic rule. If your birthday falls on the 1st through the 28th of any month, you never need to adjust anything.
Leap Day Birthdays (February 29)
If you were born on February 29, your half birthday is August 29. August has 31 days, so it works every year with no adjustment. That means a leapling can celebrate a half birthday every year even though the real birthday comes around only every four years.
An Alternate Method: Counting Days
There’s a second way people calculate it: take half the days in the year, roughly 182 or 183 days after your birthday. This can differ from the “six months” method by a day or two. For example, a birthday on January 1 gives July 1 by months, but about June 30 or July 1 by days, depending on the year.
This calculator uses calendar months, which is the most common method. If you celebrate by day count, just add 182 or 183 days to your birthday.
How to Work It Out by Hand
- Add 6 to your birth month. If the total is above 12, subtract 12.
- Keep your day number.
- Check that this day exists in the new month. If not, use the last day of that month.
Why People Celebrate Half Birthdays
- Babies: the six-month mark is a popular milestone, and many parents photograph it.
- Summer birthdays: kids born in June, July or August often miss a classroom celebration, so a half birthday in winter gives them one during the school year.
- Adults: a fun excuse for a small treat, a goal check-in, or a “mini birthday” without any pressure.
- Pets: the same math works for a pet’s birthday or adoption day. Check how old your pet is in human terms with our Dog Age Calculator or Cat Age Calculator.
Other Uses for the Same Calculation
- Half anniversaries: wedding or relationship dates, or a work start date.
- Past or future years: the rule works for any year, which helps with scrapbooks and milestone planning.
- Age on your half birthday: it’s your age plus six months. Someone turning 30 in March is 30½ on September 15.
Checking a Calculator’s Accuracy
A reliable tool should handle all the month-end dates in the table above. If a calculator ever returns “February 30” or “June 31”, it’s using simple date arithmetic that doesn’t check whether the date exists. Test any calculator, including this one, with August 31, October 31, December 31 and February 29.
