How to Calculate Percentage from Marks (The Basic Formula)

The core formula is simple:

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100

Example: If you scored 78 marks out of a possible 100, your percentage is: (78 ÷ 100) × 100 = 78%

Example with a different total: If you scored 340 marks out of 400, it’s: (340 ÷ 400) × 100 = 85%

Notice the total marks don’t have to be 100 for this to work — the formula adjusts for any total, which matters once you start combining subjects with different maximum marks (more on that below).

Multi-Subject Percentage Calculator (Matric, FSc, SSLC, 12th Class, University)

Most real marksheets involve several subjects, not just one — and your overall percentage isn’t a simple average of each subject’s percentage unless every subject is out of the same total marks. The correct method is to add up everything first, then divide:

Worked example: Say your marksheet looks like this:

Overall Percentage = (464 ÷ 525) × 100 = ≈ 88.4%

This is a detail worth paying attention to: because Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are each out of 75 rather than 100, you can’t just average the six percentage scores directly — doing so would give a slightly different (and incorrect) answer. Always sum the raw marks first when subjects have different totals.

To see why averaging percentages directly goes wrong: each subject’s individual percentage here is 82%, 91%, 90.7%, 94.7%, 85.3%, and 88% — a simple average of those six numbers comes out to about 88.6%, close to but not exactly matching the 88.4% you get from the correct method. The gap is small in this example, but it grows larger the more subjects’ totals differ from each other, and on a real marksheet even a fraction of a percentage point can matter for admissions cutoffs or merit lists.

This same method applies whether your result is labeled matric, SSLC, 10th class, 12th class, FSc, or a university transcript — the calculation doesn’t change based on what the exam or board is called, only the specific numbers do.

Target Percentage Calculator — Marks Needed to Reach Your Goal

Worked example: Say you’re aiming for an overall 80% across 6 subjects worth 600 total marks combined. You’ve already completed 4 subjects and scored 410 marks out of a possible 400… let’s use a cleaner example: you’ve scored 330 marks out of 400 across 4 subjects, and 2 subjects remain, worth 200 marks combined.

Marks Needed Overall = (80 × 600) ÷ 100 = 480 marks Marks Needed on Remaining Subjects = 480 − 330 = 150 marks out of 200 remaining

That works out to 75% on your last two subjects combined to hit your 80% overall target — a concrete, checkable number instead of a vague sense of “I need to do well.”

If the number that comes out is higher than the total marks available (for example, needing 210 marks out of 190 remaining), that target isn’t mathematically reachable anymore with your current standing — worth knowing before you set unrealistic expectations for the remaining papers.

Marks Percentage to GPA

Some students want to convert their percentage into a GPA, especially when applying to universities that use a 4.0-scale system or when applying abroad. Here’s the important caveat: unlike the percentage formula above, percentage-to-GPA conversion is not standardized. It varies by country, by education board, and often by individual university — a percentage that converts to a 3.5 GPA at one institution can convert to a different GPA entirely at another.

Treat this table as illustrative only. If you need an accurate GPA conversion for an application or official record, check your specific university’s handbook or your country’s higher education authority (in Pakistan, for instance, the Higher Education Commission publishes its own conversion guidance) rather than relying on a generic scale — the differences between institutions can be significant enough to matter for admissions or scholarship eligibility.

What Is a Passing Percentage?

Passing thresholds vary by board, country, and institution — there isn’t one universal number that applies everywhere. Different school and university systems across South Asia and elsewhere set their own minimum passing percentage, and it can also differ between school-level exams and university-level courses within the same country.

Rather than assume a specific figure, check your specific board’s or institution’s official pass criteria — it’s usually stated clearly on your result card, marksheet, or the board’s official website.
